The liquid crystal cells in the LCD monitor are filled with a material which has special optical properties. This ~polymer~ is made of long, polar molecules which align when an electrical field is applied. This forms an ordered, crystalline arrangement. The resulting crystal ~polarizes~ light passing through it. This polarized light is then blocked by a ~polarizing filter~ which covers the display, making the cell appear dark.
